Dear Myrna,
Today I received the sad news that Sister Myrna Estrada died yesterday. It seems to have been a sudden heart attack that killed her instantly. This Saturday the bishop there in Fribourg, Switzerland will say a Mass for her and the Philippino community. Then her body will be sent back to the Philippine, since her family is there, and she was one of the first sisters in her congregation. I'm sure there will be a service there.

May she rest in peace! I think she must have gone straight to heaven. I'm going to ask her help with things.
Yours,
Sister Mary

This is my last email to Sr. Myrna. She was on a trip at that time so I did not receive a reply.

December 13, 2007

Dearest Sr.,

Greetings of peace!

I would like to share what transpired during our OCDS EAST ASIA CONGRESS.

Little Mark went to the store to buy some bread. “Thank you for the bread” he said to the storekeeper. “Don’t thank me, “the storekeeper said, “All I did was kept the bread until you bought it. You should thank the man who brought the bread here.” So Mark thanked the delivery man. “Don’t thank me” he said, “All I did was haul the bread to the store; thank the baker.” So Mark thanked the baker. And he said, “I merely baked the bread from the flour. You should thank the miller.” So Mark thanked the miller. “Don’t thank me; I merely ground the wheat which someone furnished me.” At that Mark thank the granary which defended itself with “Don’t thank me I only stored the grain brought here.” Mark next said, “thank you” to the farmers. But they begged off with “we only planted and harvested the seed. You must thank the seeds.” But the seeds explained, “Don’t thank us but all the things that made us grow.” So then Mark thanked the earth and rain and sun. They in turn said, “Thank the one who made us.” In the end, Mark thanked God and said, “Thank you, God that you help men build granaries. Thank you for the delivery man and the miller. Thank God for the bakeries, their outlet stores, and the waiters behind the counter. Lord, thank you for the bread. Amen.”

And so today I thank God for the chain of relationships that make us a CARMELITE FAMILY.

The OCDS EAST ASIA Congress is great! was Luz texted reply to Regional Coordinator when she informed of the departure of Fr. Aloysius to Rome (Yes, the second in rank in Carmelite Friars was at the Congress). Gratitude, therefore, goes to the Adhoc committee for diligently preparing for the congress.

Gratitude also…

To our regional coordinator for asking lUZ to participate in the nights socials. But Luz told me we have to be together, so I introduced the poem.

NILA:
No other woman has ever received genuine honour as that given to the "most blessed of all women". All over the world, great manifestations of love and devotion have been professed to Mary in multiple imaginative and expressive ways _ feasts, titles, drawings, poems and other works of art.

In Allentown, Pennsylvania, Carmelite nuns have an exact replica of the icon of Mafy, Mother of God. The artist sees Our LADY OF FATIMA as appearing this way in her last appearance as OUR LADY OF MOUNT CARMEL. Upon presented with it, they wrote the following poem for the artist.

LUZ MARY, MOTHER OF GOD

Blessed be the mind, the heart, the hand,
That drew this icon fair,
Of beauty unserpassable, yet sweet,
God's Mother, rapt in prayer.
All pure her face, her hands, her heart unseen,
Chaste, white rapture, as morning glow.
She ponders deep. Her sorrow shows,
She bears the weight of souls on earth below!
Awesome, yet so love-filled and so warm!
Immaculate! Her praise shall never cease,
In hearts that love and cherish her, God's Mother!
Totus tuus! Mary's littlest ones,
in the valley of Saint Therese.

At the Internet Luz saw an article about an incorrupt American nujn (Mother Therese) for beatification in a monastery near Allentown, Pernnsylvania. Interestingly, the poem was made by the nuins of that monastery.

This nun had a greaty devotion to the Infan t Jesus of Prague and, so with us. In fact, our mother gifted us twins with a statue when we got married. During the OCDS Congress. we evem je;d tje statuette of the Infant JEsus during the enactment of Sinulog procession.

To the Adhoc committee for the bulletins especially on the attire to dress-up for the night socials in National costume. Our outfits are creations of inspiration from the Holy Spirit; inscriptions and designs and accessories are based from our readings. In the December 2 Marian Procession at Intramuros we attended, we were awed to see the almost eighty statues of Our Blessed Mother elaborately dressed.

To our OCDS president for encouraging Luz to write our Carmelite vocation story.

To the participants, for their sharings during the Congress and gaining new friends.

In closing, I thank the wisdom of St. Teresa of Jesus who is our patron saint in our community. She said: “Lord, do not desire that I come into Your presence with hands so empty, since the reward must be given in conformity with one’s deeds. Here is my life, here is my honor and my will. I have given all to You, I am Yours, make use of me according to Your will… I can do all things, providing You do not leave me. The Book of Her Life Ch. 21, no. 5.

Together with our families, we wish you all a Mary Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Love,
Nila & Luz

Dear Sr. Myrna,
How are you?
I remembered to email you because on August 23, my twin will be coming to Vigan with 2 Carmelite nuns from France and they will also visit Apo Abaya.
My twin and I went to see Rev. Fr. Fidelis Layug at Sta. Barbara but unfortunately he was at Vigan for his class at the Seminary. We left a statue of God the Father to the caretaker with a note to give it to Miss violeta mariano of maningding. In was on time for the celebration of the octave prayers for the consecration and solemn feast of God the Father.

Please pray for us so we can go to Hawaii. We plan to attend NAKEM Conference wherein we will particpate and talk on Our Lady of Namacpacan.

December 21, 2005

Dear Sr. Myrna,

Sister., Nila is writing you this letter just after coming from the Church for the 9-Days Christmas Dawn Masses at St. Paul's Cathedral, Vigan City.

Nila’s radio program Mondays thru Fridays entitled “Saints: Model of Good Christian Living” at the archdiocese station that started on July 2004 is still on-going. She exclaims: Having read and shared the lives of more or less 350 saints is like already living in heaven!

On the Feast of St. Lucy on December 13, 2005, Luz received a great blessing from God. Her license to operate her Sea and Sky Broadcasting franchise for a television has been approved by the National Telecommunication Commission.

Thanks to God for having supportive bishops to help us do the will of God in our lives. Once again we got recommendations from our respective bishops that we undergo scholarship/training sponsored by Mass Media Communication Foundation for Asia to help us gain knowledge and skills for television. This early, we are dreaming of the day wherein we portray the life of saints in television.

Fr. James Reuter’s has a vision for the Catholic Church in the Philippines. He calls it the Dream Sattelite project which is to have a 24-hour programming that include liturgical services, prayers, talks, dramas teaching human values in the heart of every Filipino through television, just like the EWTN of Mother Angelica.

The memories of our study at the Gregorian University; the joy of knowing you that led to the thrill of having seen the Copula; the endless wait for a special audience with the Pope that ended with Luz handing the 1 foot statuette of God the Father to the person beside the pope as he gives his blessing during the general audience a day after his birthday are among the treasures in our hearts and minds. These are a source of inspiration for us to continue doing our share in making known God and Mary through our encounters. We all do it for God’s greater glory.

Mary Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Yours in Christ,

Luz and Nila _ Ortega Twins from the Philippines

Dear Sr. Mtyrna,
I opened the e-mail of Luz and read your message. I've already given your letter to Archbishop and he read it immediately. Anyway I was about to send your picture with Myrna that Luz sent me to mail but I MISPLACED your address. Thanks to your 10 euros we were able to see the Vatican copola.
I would like to share these afterthoughts from a 2-months study at the Gregorian University in Rome for the special course, "Pastoral Communication: Planning and Practice".
It is heartening to listen one day to my twin’s ecstatic voice as she read these lines from our handouts, "the initial language of an encounter is not ‘I have five theses to present’ but ‘I saw the Lord seated on a high and lofty throne, with the train of his garment filling the temple.’ Indeed, we are happy with the knowledge gained but seeing and feeling God’s power and love protecting my twin and I like a baby in its mother’s arms is overwhelming.
We are grateful that God has given us the grace to achieve spiritual growth for we see ourselves living in union with the Spirit as shown in the following:
First, despite oppositions and problems we were motivated to go to Rome for the recommendations from Archbishop Abaya and Bishop Tobias, whom we consider as our ‘spiritual fathers’, and the assistance provided by Fr. Reuter, and Papal Nuncio Franco in securing our visas.
Second, while at the train going to Nice, my twin saw my two small bags in front of the door in the morning. I immediately opened my bag, which had the picture of St. Hannibal, a rosary and God the Father beads. We were so glad the money was intact. "Thanks God, St. Hannibal prevented the thief from getting our money."
Third, during the canonization of St. Hannilbal at the St. Peter’s Square, we saw Bishop Tobias.
Fourth, at Nice, we were to proceed to Avila, Spain to see the first Carmelite Monastery founded by St. Teresa of Avila. It turned out we did not have enough money for two tickets. Luz determined to go bought her round-trip tickets and we went out to look for a place I could stay. Fr. Clavero Guerrero, a Filipino priest agreed to let me stay at his place. God may not have brought me to Spain but I saw the wax body of St. Teresa of Avila at Laghet Sanctuary in Nice, where I prayed the Holy Rosary wearing my Carmelite brown dress. Also, I went to the Carmelite Monastery at Carros Village. As I was going down from the Monastery it rained and I was touched when a lady I met at the monastery gave me a ride.
Fifth, at a brief stop in Barcelona, Luz saw the Nuestra Senora de la Luz we failed to see on our Pilgrimage 2002. At Avila she handed the gift of the Carmelites of Pindangan, San Fernando, La Union to the Carmelite sisters and received an exchange gift. She heard mass twice donning the Carmelite brown dress. She was so awestruck with the Walls of Avila.
Sixth we held on to our Jubilee Year 2000 dream to kiss the ring of His Holiness Pope John Paul ll, but it was not meant to be. Anyway, three experiences made up for it: the breathtaking experience on top of the Vatican dome; Luz handing her statuette of God the Father to the person beside the Pope as he passed by during the Wednesday general audience, a day after his birthday; heard mass officiated by Fr. Nick Vaquilar at St. Peter’s tomb when he celebrated his 7th sacerdotal ordination.
Seventh, we saw the wax body of St. Maria Goretti at Netuno. We couldn’t find the image of Our Lady of Grace at the altar. One day, at the bus in Rome, Luz saw a magazine and inside it was the statue of the Our Lady of Grace at Netuno during a procession held on her feastday a few days after we went to Netuno. That explains why the image was not yet returned at the altar.
Eighth, two days before our departure we visited your place. It was past 12 when we reached Piazza Venezia, which was near the Gregorian University. There were no more buses so we couldn’t0 go home. Luz left the telephone number and we didn’t thought of taking a taxi. We reasoned out, God might have wanted us to see Rome at night before going back home to the Philippines. We climbed the stairs near the Piazza and ate your pabaon na pasta, chicken, and igado. At 2 a.m. we slept at the Gregorian doorsteps and at 4, went to see Scala Espana. We reached home at 6. When asked where we slept we told ‘at the Gregorian’. Our landlady, Manang Rossi told us she will inform the priest who recommended us to her but later on she said, the priest sighed, "Kawawa naman yong Kambal." Of course, we understand their worry and concern.
Ninth, we joined the pilgrimage of the Immaculate Virgin Mary, Mother of Divine Love- a 5-hour walk at midnight to 5 in the morning followed by a mass at the sanctuary. Luz volunteered to hold the light and crucifix while I held the cross. The procession was so orderly with people singing and praying. We had joined a long procession at Manaoag but it was at daytime.
P.S. I look forward to your visit to Ilocos Sur
I only desire what would serve God. I will live for Him, work for Him, watch and pray. I will tell the world that He is the Lord.
